The wide-ranging poll looks at Poles’ perceptions of threats, both domestic and foreign, to the country.

As many as 77 percent of respondents indicated that Poland is a country where one can live safely, with 67 percent saying ‘yes to some degree’ while one in ten said ‘definitely’.

Only 21 percent of respondents believe that Poland is not a safe country to live in.

“The feeling that Poland is a safe country is higher than ever before in the history of CBOS polls reaching the end of the 1980s,” the pollster informs, saying that Poles “who observe the development of the situation in Ukraine are more liable to notice and appreciate the level of security in our country”.

According to respondents, the country’s security is most influenced by the state authorities (89 percent), the army (87 percent), NATO (87 percent), the EU (86 percent), special services (82 percent), the USA (77 percent) and the police force (76 percent).

In addition, 55 percent of respondents believe that the country’s security is in the hands of all citizens.

As many as 87 percent of respondents believe that the Fire Brigade does a good job in protecting Poland’s security, with 83 percent positively assessing the army.

The poll finds that 77 percent of respondents believe NATO does a good job, with 75 percent giving the thumbs up for the police and 74 percent giving the EU a good rating.

However, according to the poll the most important factor on which security is dependent is the modernisation of the army, with 92 percent of respondents giving this reason.

NATO membership was highlighted by 88 percent, while economic development and diversification of energy sources were underscored by 86 and 82 percent of respondents respectively.

The research was undertaken by the CBOS pollster between 6-16 November on a representative selection of 934 adult Poles. (jb)
