John Godson, a Nigerian-born Polish MP, is set to join the Polish People’s Party (PSL), the rural-based junior partner in the government coalition.

Godson said in an interview for the Polish Radio that the PSL’s values are close to his and the party’s manifesto reflects his views more closely than that of any other party.

Godson, a Pentecostal pastor who changed his name to reflect his commitment to Christianity, was elected to parliament on a Civic Platform (PO) ticket, but his social conservatism drove him out of the governing party.

The PSL recently attracted six MPs who were originally elected to parliament from Twoj Ruch (Your Movement), a socially liberal party whose MPs number Poland’s first openly gay lawmaker, the first transgender MP and a number of feminists and anticlerical campaigners. (an)
