According to police spokesperson Aleksandra Siewert, the incident occurred late on Saturday night, but the taxi driver did not report the matter immediately.

However, when the driver stopped at a petrol station, employees notified police on his behalf, after expressing concern about the man's head injury. He was duly admitted to hospital.

A comparable incident occurred in Gdansk on New Year's Eve.

''On that occasion, the passenger reacted aggressively on seeing the bill,'' Siewert said.

''He pulled out a gun and started threatening [the driver], then he got out of the car and shot the windscreen.

''He then broke the rear window with the butt of the gun.''

A man was arrested for the New Year's Eve attack two hours after the incident. (nh)
