As of 8pm local time on Saturday, firefighters were still at the scene in Warsaw’s eastern Praga district by the Łazienkowski bridge, although Fire Service Captain Michał Konopka told Polish Radio that the fire still hadn’t been brought under control.

Fire services were informed of the blaze at 5.30pm, spokesman Paweł Frątczak informed, adding that wooden boards which were being stored under the bridge caught fire.

The fire spread from the boards onto a wooden scaffolding surrounding the bridge’s construction. Frątczak informed that the scaffolding was additionally treated with oil-based preservers, causing the fire to spread further.

So far, the fire has engulfed some 500 square metres of the Łazienkowski bridge, with fears that there may be considerable damage to the construction.

It has not been reported whether the fire is intentional or the result of an accident.

The boards had been left there after recent renovations on the Trasa Łazienkowska thoroughfare through Warsaw, a major east-west transit route. Significant traffic jams have been reported on other bridges in Warsaw while firefighters continue to tackle the blaze. (rg/jb)
