Warsaw mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz has said that the construction of the Łazienkowski bridge, which was engulfed in a blaze on Saturday night, may have sustained greater damage than previously anticipated.

Even though the bridge will “not need to be rebuilt from scratch”, the fire damage to the bridge has meant that it will remain closed to traffic – including buses – as analysis continues on the construction.

“Safety is paramount,” Gronkiewicz-Waltz explained for the bridge’s closure, adding that engineers may have an expert opinion on the construction “by the end of the week” with estimates on the scope of renovations and their eventual cost.

Saturday’s fire lasted throughout the night on to Sunday, with firefighters tackling a blaze which reached temperatures up to 1,000 degrees Celsius.

It is still not known what caused the fire, although the District Prosecution in Warsaw’s Praga District announced on Monday that it is to conduct an investigation into the matter. (jb)
