Farmers escalate protests, blockade railroad

Polish farmers escalated their protests on Friday morning, blockading a railroad from Warsaw and Moscow.

The farmers blockaded the railroad at the village of Borki-Kosiorki near the town of Siedlce in east-central Poland.

The protest lasted several hours and will be repeated next week, unless the government meets their demands, including price supports for pork and refunding fees for milk quotas, protest leader Sławomir Izdebski said in an interview for the Polish Radio.

Izdebski has refused to participate in negotiations of the agriculture ministry with some of the farmer leaders, which have already yielded agreement on some of the issues, such as compensation for damages wrought by wild boars. (an)
