Senate ponders fate of dead people's bank accounts

The upper house of Polish parliament is debating the destination of unclaimed funds left in bank accounts of deceased people.

It is estimated that as much as PLN 15 billion (EUR 3.63 billion) in unclaimed deposits may have accumulated in Polish banks over time, daily Rzeczpospolita reports.
Under existing law, the funds should be handed over to the municipality, where the deceased was resident.
Some of the senators want the funds to be handed over to non-governmental organisations (NGOs), while banks are lobbying for the cash to stay on their books until any potential heir turns up.
In many cases, heirs are unaware of deposits the deceased has left behind, as asking every single one of Poland’s 600 banks is impractical. (an)
