Ex-army parachuter general lands in trouble

An indictment has been filed against a retired Polish Army general who was stopped by police earlier this month for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Mieczysław B. (name withheld under Polish privacy law) was found to have blood alcohol level twice the legal limit.

The general pleaded guilty and filed for voluntary submission to a penalty. The prosecution has motioned for a financial fine and a year-long driving ban.

General Mieczysław B. retired from the army last year after 45 years in service, which included participation in Polish military missions in Syria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Western Sahara and Turkey.

He also served as Chief of the Exercise, Education and Training Branch in SHAPE, Belgium and as an adviser to the defence ministers of Poland and Afghanistan.

He is a qualified Parachute Jump Master, having more than 3,000 jumps to his credit. (mk/jb)
