The spokesperson for the national firefighting service, Paweł Frątczak, told the PAP news agency that on Wednesday, much of the damage was reported in the Lower Silesia region in south western Poland. Firefighters there reported to 842 calls, while their colleagues in Wielkopolski, Silesia and Lubuskie reported to 279, 206 and 205 calls respectively.

“Most of our activities relate to removing trees knocked down by the wind, which blocked many roads, minor streets and railroads; securing roofs, torn gutters as well as removing structural elements of buildings, which were damaged by the wind,” Frątczak said.

Since Sunday, winds in the south western part of the country have reached up to 100 km/h (62 m/h).

Three people have been injured by the wind, including two people when the van they were driving in was crushed by a falling tree. (rg)
