According to a CBA report about investigations conducted in 2014, more than a third of the 420 cases conducted by the Bureau related to bribes in Polish local governments.

The previous year, the figure was closer to 25 percent.

The Rzeczpospolita daily, which was among the first to see the report, says that the increase might indicate that corruption is growing in the local governments of Polish towns and villages.

“This could very well be the truth,” Antoni Kamiński, the former head of Poland’s arm of Transparency International, told the daily.

Rzeczpospolita says that last year 518 people were charged by CBA.

The current director of the Bureau, Paweł Wojtunik, said that the bribes “help getting things done, accelerate decisions, in, for example construction, as well as recruitment.” (rg)
