“The Social Progress Index is used in tandem with GDP to provide a holistic assessment of a country’s overall progress,” the Social Progress Imperative’s website states.

The report, which is compiled by the Social Progress Imperative in cooperation with consultancy Deloitte, states that “In the Basic Human Needs Dimension, Poland performs best on Nutrition and Basic Medical Care and has most opportunity to improve on the Shelter component.”

“In the Foundations of Wellbeing Dimension, Poland scores highest on Access to Basic Knowledge but lags on the Health and Wellness component. In the Opportunity Dimension, Poland is strongest on Personal Rights and has the most room to improve on Tolerance and Inclusion,” the Social Progress Index underlines.

Poland received an overall score of 77.98, up from 77.07 in 2014, moving Poland up three notches in the ranking. By comparison, the top three countries in the ranking are Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland with respective scores of 88.36, 88.06 and 87.97.

“The emerging European countries in [the High Social Progress] tier – Slovenia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Slovakia, and Poland – all score highly in Nutrition and Basic Medical Care, but fail to meet the level of Health and Wellness achieved by the other countries in this group,” the findings of the report state.

In the CEE region, Poland scores above Hungary (32), Latvia (33) and Lithuania (35), although trails behind Slovenia (19), the Czech Republic (22), Estonia (23) and Slovakia (25). (jb)
