The search and rescue operation lasted all night at the Wujek Sląsk mine in southern Poland.

Two miners are still missing following a quake which trapped them several hundred meters underground.

Early tests have indicated that there are signs of air in the area which is believed to contain the trapped miners.

The experts involved in the search party have met some difficulties in getting to the area of the mine, said Wojciech Jaros, the spokesperson for the mine's operator (Katowicki Holding Węglowy), said on Sunday.

The hurdles included an area of mine which was closed off by debris during the earthquake which occurred Friday night.

“Therefore, rescuers pulled out from there,” Jaros said, adding that the rescue party has set up a system of ventilating fans removing the need for cumbersome breathing equipment.

At present, a narrow corridor of around 155 metres has been cleared of rubble, Jaros explained.

It is not clear how far away the party is from their destination, although the company has vowed not to give up before they find the miners. (rg)
