According to data, which draws on information from the National Bank of Poland (NBP), 11500 fake notes were detected in 2014, some 2500 more than in 2013.

Police claim that there is a declining number of large counterfeiting operations run by gangs of organised criminals.

However, there has apparently been a rise in the number of small operations run from private homes.

Last year, the NBP introduced new banknotes in an attempt to make life more difficult for forgers. However, the policy has apparently failed to alter the game as of yet. (nh)
