Issues including education, Polish heritage abroad as well as the country’s promotion are also billed to top the agenda.

Over 40 representatives from Polonia organisations worldwide are to come to Warsaw to take part in duscussion panels and cultural events ahead of Polonia Day on 2 May.

Representatives are also set to meet Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna and Senate Speaker Bogdan Borusewicz.

Polonia organisations from as far afield as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, South Africa and the USA are to descend on Warsaw, as well as representatives from the majority of European countries, including Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.

The meeting comes after last week’s policy statement by Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna outlining foreign policy for this year, with a government programme on Polonia cooperation until 2020 currently in the works.

“Polish diplomacy is successfully ensuring support and welfare for the 20-million strong Polonia [diaspora] across the world,” Schetyna said, underlining that the priorities are being set for the Polonia in Belarus and Lithuania.

“We also remember the fate of Poles in Ukraine, not just the undertaking one-off actions such as the evacuation of Poles from the Donbas,” Schetyna added. (jb)
