The Polish flag is a symbol of endurance and the development of the national community,'' Komorowski said.

The president noted how in the past, the white and red colours of the flag had acted as symbols of aspirations and struggles for freedom.

Today we can say with pride and joy that these same white and red colours symbolise our efforts to strengthen Polish freedom and to fulfil its potential.”

Flag Day has been celebrated in Poland since an act of parliament was passed in February 2004.

Among others, flags were received on Saturday by Polish Humanitarian Organisation (which has been active in quake-stricken Nepal over the last week), the ITAKA Centre for Missing People, the Association of Volunteer Fire Brigades and WWF Poland. (nh)
