A spokesman for the Prosecutor's Office in Łódż, central Poland, has said that following an extensive psychiatric observation, medics have concluded that although the suspect was somewhat mentally unhinged at the time of the incident, he was sane enough to be criminally responsible for his actions.

As such he is apparently fit to participate in the forthcoming trial.

According to witnesses, the man entered the municipal social welfare centre in Maków at around 1.30 pm on Monday 15 December.

He apparently doused two women with a flammable liquid, and then set them alight.

Some members of staff were able to flee to the roof of an adjoining building, but the aforementioned women both died from their injuries.

After being arrested in December, the man claimed he had no recollection of the incident, but said that an application he had filed to be placed in a care home had been rejected by the centre. (nh)
