English most popular Matura subject

Over 273,000 Matura examiners choose English as their optional subject, the highest among all the subjects offered.

Over 172,000 high school students sat for an English-language Matura exam this year – about 90 percent of the total.

Meanwhile, 101,000 students from technical high schools (85 percent of the total) sat for an English-language exam.

The second most popular foreign language among the Matura sitters is German. The exam will be taken by 13,700 high-school students and around 14,000 technical high school students this year.

Matura is the equivalent of the A-levels in the UK, and the exams are key to obtaining a higher education. (rg)
