Noted historians including Norman Davies and Timothy Snyder are among those taking part in the two-day event, which is entitled 'The Legacy of World War II Reconsidered After 70 Years,' and hosted at the European Solidarity Centre.

Today's session precedes Poland's main Victory in Europe Day tributes on Thursday and Friday, which will be attended by heads of state from across Europe, with most EU leaders declining to attend celebrations in Moscow on 9 May.

Director of the Centre for Polish-Russian Dialogue Sławomir Dębski, who is one of the participants in the conference, has told Polish Radio that “debate and discussion are necessary, as World War II was and is the subject of historical manipulation, and a series of myths have managed to take root and spread.”

Some of them are dangerous, because they shape social attitudes which are disastrous for the modern world,” he added. (nh)
