Plumes of smoke were seen coming out of a flat in an apartment block in the western part of the city at around midday.

The crime was apparently witnessed by two female carers who had arrived at the flat to look after the 68-year-old woman.

Reportedly the suspect burst into the room where the group had gathered and poured a flammable liquid over his mother and set her alight. He then dealt her a series of axe blows.

She died shortly afterwards.

One of the carers is currently in hospital with injuries, while another managed to escape unharmed.

A manhunt was launched and the suspect was arrested around 1 pm in a bank. (nh)
