An amendment to the Penal Code allows for licences to be taken away immediately if a driver is caught exceeding a given speed limit by 50 km per hour.

With Poland repeatedly among the worst offenders in Europe in the sphere of road deaths, the crackdown is designed to prompt safer driving.

A special police action across Poland today entitled 'Speed' (Prędkość) has been many drivers caught out.

Among several examples across the country, one driver in Szczecin was stopped after driving 124 km per hour in a 70 km per hour zone. He promptly lost his licence.

“There's no more joking around,” commented police spokesman Marek Konkolewski. (nh)
