Iwo the bear returns to Poland

A five-year-old brown bear named Iwo, who was equipped with a GPS tracking collar, has now made it back to Poland, crossing the border in the south-east Bieszczady region after a trek which took in much of Slovakia and parts of Hungary.

In early May the bear, whose home is in the Polish Tatra mountains, embarked on a journey which saw him visiting a national park as far away as Hungary, meaning that over three weeks the animal made a trek of some 380 kilometres.

The bear was fitted with a tracking collar last year, enabling researchers from the Tatra National Park to follow Iwo’s movements. In his travels, the bear passed close to human settlements, and crossed a motorway in Slovakia using a special corridor for wild animals.
Iwo spent about a week in Hungary before setting out on his return. According to the Tatra National Park, Iwo’s expedition could cover more than 400 km. (ek/jb)
