The man, Remigiusz D. (name withheld under Polish privacy laws) was in a crowd when Komorowski arrived to meet members of the public in the northern Polish city of Toruń.

Members of the Polish secret service, BOR, managed to hold the man as he lunged, arms raised, at the president.

He was taken to the local police station, and questioned about attacking the BOR officials. This is the only line of investigation being undertaken at present, the TVN broadcaster reports.

Members of the Civic Platform (PO) party have called for Komorowski’s rival in the presidential race to react.

“We can see how emotions at the end of the campaign, as well as verbal aggression is beginning to take the form of physical aggression directed against President Bronisław Komorowski,” said PO MP Rafał Grupiński.

“We would like to express our sincerest concern and anger, and also expect Andrzej Duda, Komorowski’s opponent in this election, to take a decisive reaction to this kind of behaviour towards his adversary.”

Komorowski and Duda face each other in the second round of the presidential elections on Sunday 24 May. (rg)
