According to the PKW, 17.4 percent of the electorate had cast their votes by midday, compared with 14.61 by noon on 10 May.

As many as 30.5 million Poles are entitled to vote in the election between President Bronisław Komorowski and conservative opposition candidate Andrzej Duda.

The highest turnout thus far has been in Krynica Morska, northern Poland, where 37.34 percent of the electorate had voted by noon.

Polling stations will remain open to voters until 9pm, promptly after which an exit poll will indicate which way the political wind has blown.

The final turnout in the 10 May first round was 48.96. (nh)
