“I was convinced that this would happen, because I observe democracy in Poland and abroad,” Lech Wałęsa, Poland’s first democratically elected president and a Nobel-peace prize laurate, told the TVN24 broadcaster.

“It is ever more evident that democratic improvements are necessary,” Wałęsa added.

The former unionist had told an interview on Friday that “[incumbent president Bronisław] Komorowski was likely to win,” but added that he “is not afraid of Duda.”

On Monday, following Duda’s surprising result in Sunday’s second round of the presidential elections, Wałęsa said that he didn’t participate in this campaign because he doesn’t “like to lose”.

The 71-year-old politician said that it is good to get new blood in Polish politics.

“We occupy some positions for too long and do not allow new people in. There is no good contact between the government and the nation. This results in the fact that sometimes ‘young wolves attack’,” the former President said. (rg)
