Although Polish preschoolers will soon be taught foreign languages, only a minority of teachers are qualified to do so.

A mere 36 percent of Polish teachers have received the proper education to teach foreign languages, according to the Education Information System (SIO).

This is a serious problem, Gazeta Wyborcza says, as all five-year-old children in Poland will be learning a foreign language as of 1 September. The programme will be expanded to all preschoolers by 2017.

So far, only a third of preschoolers have learnt foreign languages in Polish kindergartens . Most of these classes are taught by specially-trained teachers.

The inclusion of this subject into the core curriculum, which was decided on last year by the Education Ministry, was meant to improve these statistics.

Foreign languages will now join such subjects as arts and crafts, sports and music appreciation, for which parents do not have to pay extra. (rg)
