All in all there were 444 reported accidents, with 533 people injured.

Statistics were relatively similar to last year's Corpus Christi break, when 46 died and 577 were injured in a total of 465 accidents.

There was some improvement in the sphere of drink-driving. Whereas last year, 1801 people were pulled up for drink-driving, this year the number was 1619.

According to police, most offenders this year were stopped on Sunday, when 527 were caught out.

The reasons for accidents on the roads were consistent with previous years.

Once again, the most common causes of accidents were excessive speed combined with arrogance, improper overtaking, not giving way and alcohol,” a police statement confirmed. (nh)
