Contact was lost with the men following an earthquake on 18 April.

Wojciech Jaros, a spokesperson for Katowicki Holding Węglowy which operates the mine, has confirmed that the bodies were spotted after 8 pm on Monday.

Jaros said that conditions in the area are very difficult, owing to landslides and temperatures of 40 degrees. The rescue team had been using special equipment to aid breathing.

The two victims are apparently in a particularly narrow passage, and Jaros has said that the process of removing the bodies will be highly challenging and could last several days. (nh)
