In recent days, optical fibre networks of the Podlaskie were connected to the Lubelskie province in north-eastern and eastern Poland respectively, with the systems of two other regions also being connected.

Some smaller projects will follow, to cover areas void of internet on the map of Poland, and ensure online access in individual households, the Minister said.

“In the framework of the ‘Digital Poland’ project which we have just started, we are planning to run tenders for prospective IT investors to cover internet voids in the third quarter. So far we have done precise stock taking of homes to identify needs and system gaps."

The Minister added that PLN 800 million (EUR 191 mln) will be earmarked for the purpose.

According to the ‘Digital Poland’ project, by 2020 every citizen is to have access to the internet, with bandwidth of at least 30 Mb/s.

All IT infrastructure development expenditures for Poland by that time are estimated to cost around PLN 10 billion (EUR 2.4 bln). (mo/rg)
