They are mostly now in stable condition, and several have already been discharged from hospital.

Katowice police spokesperson Jacek Pytel said that the first eight were hospitalised on Thursday night with symptoms of poisoning.

On Friday afternoon the number had risen to 28 people; and on Saturday morning – to nearly 50. Among them were two minors, as well as a pregnant woman.

Police officers from the department for countering drug-related crime in Katowice are currently investigating the source of the poisoning, although it is clear the people ingested booster drugs.

“Most of the people mention the name Mocarz [the Mighty One]," Pytel told the PAP news agency on Saturday.

The sale of booster drugs is a grey area in Polish law.

Packets of powders or ground leaves are sold as “collector’s items” with a notice on the package saying “not to be ingested”. In this way, they can be sold as part of a loophole in the law. (rg)
