Among the names which will run under the PO party banner in the 25 October general election are Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz, Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna, Rafał Grupiński, Joanna Mucha, Sławomir Neumann and Cezary Grabarczyk.

These are the better known politicians on the list, who will likely head their respective constituencies.

On Friday, regional authorities within the party completed the procedure of laying out the list of candidates to run in the October parliamentary elections.

Experts say that the final list could differ slightly from the one announced, with adjustments possibly being made in next week's national board of the party.

As for the people leading each of the 41 electoral districts in Poland, the party chose prominent names, with a long history within PO. Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz is to head the electoral list in Warsaw.

Tape scandal

The top positions on the lists also included several politicians who were involved in the “finance tape scandal” which rocked the political and business spheres when recordings of prominent officials were leaked to the media.

These include former sports minister Andrzej Biernat (who is being investigated for fraud), secretary of state at the Treasury Ministry Zdzisław Gawlik, former deputy Environment Minister Stanisław Gawłowski, former secretary of state at the Economy Ministry Tomasz Tomczykiewicz, as well as former health minister Bartosz Arłukowicz.

A few weeks ago, two former prominent politicians of the Civic Platform party, announced that they will not be running in the elections.

Both Radosław Sikorski, the former speaker of the Sejm lower house of parliament and Jacek Rostowski, a former finance minister, were involved in the finance tape scandal. (rg/rk)
