Representatives of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) told a press conference in Warsaw on Tuesday that the hot spell in Poland has no end in sight.

"According to our forecasts, the heat will last even over the next week,” IMGW meteorologist Grażyna Dąbrowska said. “Almost across the whole country there is the third - the highest – warning level about the heat wave."

Expected storms may be accompanied by hail and wind reaching 70 km/h in the west of Poland, she added.

"Since June we have observed a steady decline in the water level. Recent increases in temperatures and continued lack of rainfall mean that the water level has reached the low water mark," said IMGW hydrologist Marianna Sasim.

A lingering heatwave and low water levels have hit the country's outdated electricity system, forcing the country to cut power supply to industry to avoid blackouts. (jh/rk)
