The Polish Power Grid (PSE) operator could on Tuesday remove restrictions which were earlier imposed on the use of industrial electricity in the country due to the heat wave.

PSE has already resigned from the highest level of electricity curbs which were introduced on Monday.

Polish authorities said that the limitations were set due to the lower water levels in Polish waterways which limited the production of electricity. A constant supply of water is necessary to cool power-producing equipment.

As a result of the cuts, several companies in Poland saw a decrease in production, including steel giant ArcelorMittal.

If all goes according to plan, the restrictions could be dropped to a "stage 11".

“This means that nobody will be obliged to apply any restrictions,” said Henryk Majchrzak, the head of PSE.

An analyst at DM BOŚ, Łukasz Bugaj, said that the real effects of the power restrictions on the Polish economy will be seen in the macroeconomic data in August.

The curbs on energy use do not only affect the 1,600 largest industrial users of electricity in Poland, but also ordinary Poles. The IKEA store in the southern Polish city of Katowice was forced to close for two days due to the restrictions. (rg/rk)
