A torrential downpour on Sunday unearthed human bones on the grass banks of Wawel Hill, Kraków, beneath the citadel from which Poland's monarchs ruled the country for centuries.

A passer-by noticed what appeared to be human bones protruding from the ground following the storm on Sunday afternoon and duly informed the police.

More bones were discovered on Monday, and all the remains have been transported to the Department of Forensic Medicine in Kraków.

It seems that these are remains from bygone times,” commented Katarzyna Padło, Chief Commissioner of the Małopolska Police.

Just how old they are will be clarified by the Department of Forensic Medicine,” she added.

The District Prosecutor's Office has declined to expand on the matter.

Let's wait for the results of the tests,” said Janusz Hnatko from the Prosecutor's Office.

Then we will be able to say something more.” (nh/rk)
