Marcin D. (name withheld under Polish privacy laws), was detained on Sunday, with officers of the Central Anticorruption Bureau (CBA) carrying out the arrests at various locations across the country.

Among the detainees is a lawyer and a disabled person, because the extortion of public funds relates to the State Fund for Rehabilitation of Disabled People and is connected, among other matters, with co-financing the employment of the disabled,” commented Piotr Kosmaty, spokesman for the Appellate Prosecutor's Office in Kraków.

Kosmaty said that the investigation concerns the extortion of PLN 13 million, and subsequent money-laundering.

He added that among the detainees are people who led a group of organized criminals.”

Kosmaty confirmed that all five detainees, taking in three men and two women, are due to be charged.

Lawyer Marcin D. was recently involved in a prominent case involving a doctor who declined to carry out an abortion, despite knowing that the child would be born with deformities. Marcin D. represented the mother of the child, and the latter died shortly after being born.

Marcin. D is married to Marta Kaczyńska, the only daughter of the late president Lech Kaczyński, who was killed in the 10 April 2010 Smolensk air crash in Russia. (nh/rk)
