Lawyer Marcin D. (surname withheld owing to Polish privacy laws) was arrested on Sunday with four other suspects. The arrests took place at various locations across Poland.

The suspects were brought to Kraków, where the investigation is being led by the Appellate Prosecutor's Office.

Although Marcin D. exercised his right to remain silent on Monday during questioning, his lawyer Łukasz Rumszek has stated that his client is innocent.

The five suspects are accused of embezzling PLN 13 million from the State Fund for Rehabilitation of Disabled People (PFRON), and subsequent money laundering.

The investigation was launched in April 2013.

Marcin. D is married to Marta Kaczyńska, the only daughter of late president Lech Kaczyński, who was killed in the 10 April 2010 Smolensk air crash in Russia.

The man could serve up to ten years in prison if found guilty. (nh/rk)
