Zakopane sets new August weather record

The average temperature in July and August exceeded 15 degrees Celsius in the Tatra resort of Zakopane, southern Poland.

Data in August show there were only six days of rain and in the month as a whole only 35.5 mm of rain fell in the holiday resort in the foothills of the Tatra mountain range.

Michał Furmanek of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) said average monthly rainfall in August is 139.9 mm. The previous lowest rainfall was in 1992 when in August it rained for nine days, and monthly rainfall was 38.3 mm.

July was also one of the driest in history - in Zakopane 63.3 mm of rain fell, against an average of 176.4 mm.

The mean daily temperature in the Tatra Mountains was also one of the hottest on record. In August it was 18.2 degrees. The average temperature in July was 17.7 degrees. (jh/rk)
