Poland will spend almost PLN 16 billion (EUR 3.9 billion) on modernisation of its navy over the next 10 years, Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz said.

"Poland is changing, developing, renovating roads, kindergartens, nurseries, museums. Entire neighborhoods in our cities are changing ... But we also remember defence," Kopacz said during a ceremony at the repair shipyard in Gdańsk, northern Poland, to launch the destroyer ORP "Cormorant II."

Kopacz added that "Cormorant II" will "inevitably increase the security of shipping routes and marine training grounds."

"This is our priority, we will implement these orders with Polish contractors," she said.

The contract for design and construction of three units of "Cormorant II" was signed in September 2013 between the Armament Inspectorate and a consortium made up of the Shipbuilding and Repair company, the Research and Development Centre for Marine Technology and the Naval Shipyard in Gdynia.
