“We have had a year of fulfilled promises; the only thing that we have not achieved is to change Polish policy to improve relations between the government and the opposition,” the head of Polish government said on Wednesday.

Ewa Kopacz succeeded former Prime Minister Donald Tusk when he took on the position as the head of the European Council in Brussels.

Prime Minister Kopacz said that a speech delivered a year ago outlined the policy of her government and set a programme of what she wanted to do.

“I took on the difficult task of being the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland with a sense of responsibility for the fatherland, a sense of responsibility for the country,” Kopacz added.

She noted that this followed the success of Prime Minister Donald Tusk when he became head of the European Council. "I then clearly declared that from the first day I take full responsibility for government’s policy and full responsibility for the statements that I give,” PM Kopacz explained.

Over the last twelve months, the governing Civic Platform (PO) party has seen a number of high-profile resignations, including former speaker of the Sejm lower house of parliament, Radosław Sikorski. He was among a number of prominent politicians within the party who have been embroiled in the so-called “finance-tape scandal”.

The PO party has been losing support ahead of the general election slated for 25 October, according to opinion polls over the last two months. The opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party currently enjoys the support of around 34 percent of the electrorate. (rg/rk)
