Jarosław Kaczynski, head of a conservative opposition coalition, claimed on Tuesday evening that his victory in the 25 October general election would lead to a period of 'serene' rule in Poland.

Kaczyński, who is leader of the Law and Justice party, lambasted the current coalition government of liberal Civic Platform and agrarian Polish People's Party, which has been in power since 2007.

Some say that this has been the worst government since 1989, and I am inclined to agree with that opinion,” he said during a speech in Warsaw's Żoliborz district.

Indeed, all the diseases that accompanied us as a result of the transition [from communism], have now reached an especially serious condition - they have been taken to the extreme,” he claimed.

Law and Justice's candidate for the presidency Andrzej Duda won May's election, confounding pollsters, as outgoing president Bronisław Komorowski had been considered the clear favourite at the beginning of the year.

Kaczyński said that a complete victory of Law and Justice” would lead to serene governance, cooperation with the president and the right attitude towards the opposition.

The alternative is a quarrelsome coalition of various small groups around Civic Platform,” he said.

The Law and Justice leader reiterated his electoral promises, including restoring the recently raised retirement age to 60 years of age for women, and 65 for men (as opposed to 67 for both sexes), and providing benefits to the level of PLN 500 per child, in a bid to support families.

Recent polls have indicated that the Law and Justice coalition stands a chance of winning the 25 October election, although it might not be able to form a majority cabinet. (nh/rk)
