Over the next five years, PLN 660 (EUR 156) million will be directed to public and school libraries in Poland to start the National Reading Encouragement program.

The initiative, introduced by both the Culture and Education Ministries, is aimed at increasing readership levels.

More than half of the amount, PLN 435 (EUR 103) million, will come from the national budget and over one-third will come from local governments.

“It is very hard to ask teachers to encourage children to read,” said Education Minister Joanna Kluzik-Rostkowska, adding that the task is even harder if the books “are not on hand”.

Polish Culture Minister Małgorzata Omilanowska explained that the total sum will be divided to buy new materials for public libraries, modernise libraries in schools and larger towns, and support reading programmes in schools.

With general electionsin Poland on 25 October, Omilanowska added that financing has already been earmarked in the budget for next year.

According to polls carried out by the National Library in 2014 and 2013, 11 percent of people above the age of 15 read books on a regular basis. (ua/aba/rk)
