More than 100,000 ‘polluting’ VWs in Poland

Poland’s Environment Minister informed that 139,000 Volkswagen cars owned by Polish drivers are fitted with the controversial “defeat device” that enables manipulation of exhaust results in diesel engines.

Environment Minister Maciej Grabowski, spoke at a press conference in Warsaw on Wednesday about vehicles with the notorious EA 189 EU5 diesel engines found in VW, Skoda, Audi, and Seat-branded automobiles on Polish roads that have inbuilt software aimed at falsifying exhaust data.
VW announced its plans to discuss this issue with EU environmental leaders at an upcoming session.
The Environment Minister was asked by reporters if Poland anticipates banning new VW registrations, following in the footsteps of Switzerland and Romania. Grabowski He made it clear that Poland is not planning on fining VW.
Matthias Mueller, the newl-appointed head of VW, told an interview with German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, that the German carmaker will deal with the “defeat device”. Drivers will be called to service stations where the software allowing false exhaust readings in the diesel engines will be replaced by software providing correct readings.
VW has seen its stock price plummet in recent weeks, following an investigation by the United States Environmental Protection Agency into claims that the cars were producing more exhaust fumes in real-life use than in testing situations. (ua/rg/rk)
