Key representatives of Polish parties contending for mandates in parliamentary elections on 25 October will take part in a televised debate five days ahead of the vote.

Jan Dworak, head of Poland's media watchdog, the National Broadcasting Council, has issued invitations to the debate to eight groupings: the ruling Civic Platform, main opposition party Law and Justice, Polish Peoples' Party, which is a minority member of the ruling coalition, the Together party, KORWiN, the United Left, Kukiz'15 and Nowoczesna.pl (Modern.pl).

The event is to be aired by three major broadcasters: public TVP and commercial networks TVN and Polsat.

The key players on the arena, ruling Civic Platform and rival Law and Justice, have already committed to taking part in the showdown ahead of the 25 October ballot. The ruling party has not, however, disclosed who would be speaking on behalf of their grouping.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz repeated her offer of a one-on-one with Jarosław Kaczyński, the head of the largest opposition party, rather than its candidate for Prime Minister Beata Szydło.

Political advisor to Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz, Michał Kamiński, told news channel TVN24 that "other members of Civic Platform will be meeting with the remaining party leaders." (aba/rk)
