State authorities have earmarked some PLN 443 (over EUR 100) for the salary increase, alongside year-end bonuses, performance awards and benefit funds.

Following consultations with the trade unions, the chiefs of services linked to the Interior Ministry are to forward their pay-rise proposal to the decision makers by the end of the month.

The ministry's move coincided with a demonstration held in Warsaw by several thousand trade union members of the police forces, firefighters, border guards, prison personnel and customs officers demanding higher pay and better working conditions. On Monday, a protest camp was set up in front of the Parliament building.

The public sector workers have spoken out against what they consider a pay rise freeze put in place in 2009. Police officers demanded that the government follows through on its pledge to raise salaries by PLN 300 (EUR 71), a decision taken by former prime minister Donald Tusk.

The protesters also called for a modernisation of services subordinate to the Interior Ministry and the reinstatement of full-pay sick leaves over a three-month period. In June last year, the law enforcement and emergency services were stripped of the privilege and at present, receive 80-percent of their pay when on sick leave. (aba/rk)
