The sum, earmarked for adapting Polish infrastructure to the needs of cyclists, will be financed from funds allocated in the 2014-2020 EU budget, Infrastructure Minister Maria Wasiak announced on Thursday.

As Wasiak underlined, efforts to promote both cycling and pedestrian traffic are aligned with Poland's transport development strategy until 2020.

By 2014, Poland's cycling trails reached over 18,000 kilometers, while bicycle paths spanned 9,000 kilometers in total.

One of the ministry's most ambitious projects now underway is the expansion of the cycling network across Poland's eastern regions. The undertaking entails the construction of 2,000 kilometers of routes in the Warmia-Mazury, Podlasie, Lublin, Świętokrzyskie and Podkarpacie provinces. The entire investment is to take up PLN 300 million (over EUR 70 million), with a bulk of the cost covered from EU coffers.

According to data provided by the ministry, Poles purchase up to one million new bicycles each year. At least one two-wheeler is owned by over 63 percent of households. (aba/rk)
