According to preliminary investigations, the two trams were travelling in the same direction when the driver of the first one braked suddenly to avoid a pedestrian who walked onto the tracks.

The second tram, travelling close behind, slammed into the back of the first.

Thirteen passengers were injured, as well as the driver of the second tram. The latter needed to be pried out of the wreckage by firefighters using specialist equipment.

The tram traffic on Al. Jerozolimskie in central Warsaw has been stopped in both directions on Wednesday. (rg/rk)
