Polish police have warned drivers and pedestrians to take special care over the coming days as Poles nationwide prepare to visit family graves for All Saints' and All Souls' Day on 1 and 2 November.

The annual 'Operation Torch' aims to minimise accidents on the roads, as Poles travel to and from cemeteries.

An increased number of police vehicles will be on patrol across the country, with regular checks being carried out on drivers.

“The autumn weather - rain, fog and the temperature drop – can all adversely affect conditions on the roads, as well as pedestrian visibility and safety,” commented police spokesman Andrzej Browarek.

Police have noted that new regulations oblige all pedestrians in non-residential areas of Poland to wear clothing with reflective elements.

Last year, during the three-day period encompassed by Operation Torch, there were 196 road accidents. Some 252 people were injured and 20 were killed, including 8 pedestrians. Meanwhile, 910 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

All Saints' Day is on Sunday 1 November, while All Souls' Day is on Monday 2 November. Time-honoured tradition sees graveyards across the country bathed in light on both nights, with lanterns and flowers left on the graves of loved ones. (nh/rk)
