The woman was walking along a street with her mother in the Baltic coastal city when the accident occurred.

The 34-year-old died on the spot and her mother was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Since the early morning, the fire brigade has been called into action about 100 times in the surrounding Pomerania region.

Gales are forecast to wreak havoc across northern and central Poland on Sunday, with only the southern provinces eluding the storms.

Over 3000 people were left without power in the northern Warmia-Masuria region.

Winds may reach as much as 80 km per hour. However, weather forecasters believe that the situation will calm on Monday. (nh/rk)
