Janniger handed in his resignation on 1 December, said Defence Ministry spokesman Bartłomiej Misiewicz.

According to radio station Radio Zet, the 20-year-old is now to continue his studies in the United States, which he had previously put on hold.

Janniger started working for prominent Law and Justice deputy, current Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz while still a teenager, assisting in that party's own probe into the Smolensk air crash in Russia of 2010. Poland's then president Lech Kaczyński was killed in that crash. The Law and Justice government has indicated it intends to reopen the investigation into the causes of the crash.

Janniger went on to become head of his mentor’s constituency office in Warsaw and then an advisor to Macierewicz when the latter was appointed Defence Minister.

Janniger’s young age and lack of experience became the subject of numerous derisive comments and memes online. (aba/pk/rk)
