“We wish to voice our concern and opposition to the undermining of the authority and independence of the Constitutional Tribunal,” reads a letter authored by over a dozen prominent political figures in Poland, including former presidents Bronisław Komorowski, Aleksander Kwaśniewski, alongside former prime ministers Ewa Kopacz, from Civic Platform (PO), Leszek Miller, outgoing head of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) and Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, also a former prime minister of the Law and Justice (PiS) party.

“We stand in defence of the Tribunal and its role as a legitimate stronghold overlooking the constitutionality of Polish regulations and the country’s rule of law,” the politicians wrote.

While the opposition has been fiercely critising the ruling party’s recent amendments to the Constitutional Tribunal, PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński has said that changes to the Constitutional Court are aimed at tackling cronyism. (aba/rg)
