In an interview for German newspaper Die Welt, Wałęsa said that the law can be changed, and yet as long as it is in force, it has to be followed.

In his opinion, president Duda is working for the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party and does not make independent choices.

Wałęsa added that although he is tired of politics, he might not have a choice and join anti-government protests, stressing that he will not allow the “country to be destroyed”.

The former president warned that as the conflict arises, it might get out of hand, and possibly even spark a civil war.

In recent weeks hundreds of thousands of people marched the streets around Poland protesting government actions such as a change to the law related to the Constitutional Tribunal. (tf/rg)
